Living Green is a way of life in California! While many in our golden state may still be in the dark about recycling, California as a whole blows away the nation when it comes to responsible electronics recycling.
The national average is reported to be somewhere between 10-20% of all electronics discarded are recycled. This means that the other 80%+ goes where exactly??? More than likely, it goes into the ground via the landfills. You might ask what this does to their local environment…well, when toxins are released over time, they leech into local water tables and are spread to surrounding areas. They contaminate both the water and the ground, and will continue to spread out over time.
The given statistics in California for electronics recycled is between 50-70%; 2-4 times the national average! We are the only state with a true recycling program for CRT devices and the program is actually in the black! The electronics recycling fees collected when new electronics are purchased have actually been reduced to 2005 levels, but that is a topic for another blog, another day.
All this just to say, way to go California!!! Keep on recycling!
